Fuzhou University was established in 1958. It is a national “211 Project” university sponsored by the Ministry of Education and the People’s Government of Fujian Province, integrating science, engineering, economy, management, literature, law, arts, etc. The major of law originally began in 1993. In 2001, School of Law was organized to meet the demand of disciplinary adjustment and college system reforms.

The School enjoys the right to confer the doctorate degree in the second-level discipline of environment and resource protection law (since 2006), the master degrees in the first-level discipline of law, and the degree of Juris Master. Particularly, the first-level discipline of law has been listed as one of the key programs of Fujian province. With over 500 undergraduate students and 600 graduate students, a research-oriented law school has taken shape. As is shown in the report of the national assessment of China universities in 2013, Law School of Fuzhou University ranked 41st in terms of professional ranking, 36th in terms professional reputation; according to the Billboards of China University Alumni Association, it ranked 35th among all legal majors of Chinese universities and won the honor of Famous Discipline in China in 2014.   

The School boasts 2 research centers and one practice base at provincial level, five teaching & research offices, one education center and 2 research institutions at the university level. It possesses a well-structured faculty of young and middle-aged teaching staff with excellent scholarship and strong passion for teaching. Most of them have obtained the high professional title, doctorate degree, and/or got the experience of overseas study or visiting. Several professors enjoy the special subsidies of the State Council or are included in “Fujian Provincial Hundred, Thousand and Ten Thousand Talent Project” or are selected as Excellent Legal Elite or Excellent Youth Talent of Fujian Province; several professors also hold the positions of Vice-presidents or Executive Directors of the national academic societies.

The main body of the school is adjacent to the North Gate of Fuzhou University and lies at the crossroad of Northgate Rd. and North Ring Road. The School has a detached teaching and researching building with a construction area of 5000 m2, a legal library, an independent Juris Master Education Center (Yishan Campus), a 300-seat moot court with the simultaneous interpretation and live recording equipment, a medium and a small sized moot court respectively, an arbitral moot court, a center for student entrepreneurship and a law clinic etc.

Bearing in mind the guideline of opening policy, the School has established worldwide academic exchange with USA, Germany, UK, Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Macao as well as the numerous domestic universities and institutions. It has founded more than 20 “Teaching and Practice Bases” within the legal practice departments or institutions of the courts, procuratorates, law firms and arbitration institutions. Several famous scholars home and aboard have been engaged as honored professors, and a group of professional experts from the legal practice institutions have been appointed as the concurrent mentors of graduate students. The pattern of cooperation between the university and the society has been comprehensively formed. The School has consecutively hosted many famous international or nationwide academic conferences such as the National Straits Jurisprudence Forum, the Southeast Jurisprudence Forum, organized the legal saloons and the professorial tribunes as well as the law graduates’ legal symposiums etc.

  Currently, the School is striving for its academic brand of Southeast Jurisprudence, including publishing a series of the legal works, offering the Southeast Tribune of Jurists, hosting the Southeast Jurisprudence Forum and the Legal Saloons, as well as editing the Southeast Jurisprudence Periodicals. The aim of the School is to become a training base of legal elites, a research base of legal sciences, a base of legal information, and a consultation service base for strategic decisions etc. in Fujian Province, thus reaching the level of advanced schools national wide in terms of overall education quality, legal researches, public service and social returns.
